Planes
From Lauremor
Lauremor is just one plane of existence out of many. Lauremor is your standard "prime material plane" that exists along with the countless others that exist. Some of the other prime material planes are Faerun, Krynn, Athas, and Greyhawk. The prime material planes do not have any direct connection to each other. They are organized in the center of the planes in a single stack, but there is padding -- in the form of the astral plane -- between each plane.
There are nine inner planes that come in contact with Lauremor at all times. These are the astral, ethereal, shadow, positive, negative, and the four elemental planes. The astral plane is the gateway between Lauremor and the other planes. Unless a portal exists directly between an outer plane and Lauremor, travel through the astral plane is required.
The ethereal, shadow, positive, and negative, planes are limited to Lauremor. The four elemental planes connect to all prime material planes, the astral plane, and a select few of the outer planes. People that plan on traveling to an outer plane must go through the astral plane, tread across an elemental plane, or create a gate.
There sometimes exists astral paths between the various planes. These are usually created by powerful magicians, the gods, or naturally. Naturally existing astral paths are extremely unpredictable, and unstable. It is possible to take an astral path from Lauremor to an outer plane, but not have a way back. Journey on the astral paths is very dangerous, and should only be attempted by the most powerful of people.
